Crawford qualifies for Olympics with strong placing in Duesseldorf
DUESSELDORF, Germany — Canada’s Chandra Crawford might have not won the race, but she had reason to smile after a 12th-place finish in a skate-ski sprint race at the World Cup in Duesseldorf, Germany, on Saturday.

Canada 20th in Duesseldorf team sprint relay
Perianne Jones and Chandra Crawford failed to qualify out of the semifinals, finishing 20th in Sunday's World Cup team sprint in Duesseldorf, Germany. Italy won the women's race and Russia was victorious on the men’s side.

Le Guellec 12th in biathlon World Cup in Sweden
OESTERSUND, Sweden — Canada’s Jean-Philippe Le Guellec took another huge stride forward in his quest to be the first Canadian male to win a World Cup medal in biathlon after finishing 12th in the men’s sprint competition Saturday in Oestersund, Sweden.

Snowboard PGS canceled at Limone Piemonte
The International Ski Federation has canceled the first parallel giant slalom of the 2010 LG Snowboard FIS World Cup. The event had been scheduled for Limone Piemonte, Italy, on Dec. 6, but has been canceled due to poor snow conditions.

Meet your 2010 assistant chef de mission: Steve Podborski
In the sport of alpine skiing, Steve Podborski is a trailblazer and a Canadian legend. The native of Don Mills, Ontario became the first North American man to win an Olympic medal in downhill skiing when he raced for bronze in 1980 in Lake Placid. That is not his only groundbreaking performance. Two years later, he was the first non-European ever to win the World Cup overall title in downhill. In all, Podborski has eight victories on the World Cup circuit.

Anchorage to host U.S. XC Championships again
For the second season in a row, the ConocoPhillips U.S. Cross Country Championships will call Kincaid Park its home, as the event makes its way to Anchorage, Alaska, a hotbed of cross-country action, during the first week of January, just over a month from the time that top athletes competing will be Vancouver bound.

Schlierenzauer best in FIS Grand Prix final
After four previous victories, the Austrian highflyer took his fifth win in the "Vogtland-Arena" in the final of the FIS Grand Prix Ski Jumping summer series. He outperformed Robert Kranjec of Slovenia with his last jump, beating the first-round leader by 0.9 points. Finland’s Harri Olli, who set a new hill record of 146 meters in a training round, finished third. The overall FIS Grand Prix winner, Simon Ammann of Switzerland, skipped the last competition.
