Whistler to host Nor-Am Finals, GMC Nations Cup

WHISTLER, B.C. — Whistler is set to welcome some of North America's top alpine skiers for the Northwest Funds Nor-Am Cup Finals and the GMC Nations Cup.

The finals of the Nor-Am Cup, which take place at the Whistler ski area from March 15-20, will determine who is crowned the overall champion in super-G, super-combined, giant slalom and slalom. An overall winner — the skier with the most points across all disciplines — is also crowned.

World Cup spots for the 2011-12 season are up for grabs for the two skiers who accumulate the most points throughout the season, while the two athletes with the most points overall win World Cup spots in every discipline. The downhill champion was determined last month when Wiley Maple of the USA and Canada's Kelby Halbert of Bradford, Ont., finished first and second overall, respectively, to earn World Cup spots with their national teams.

The Whistler, B.C., ski area also plays host to the GMC Nations Cup on March 19. This friendly but intense competition features skiers from Canada and the U.S. going head-to-head to win bragging rights as well as the Nations Cup trophy.
