Snow dump nixes women's super-G at Val d'Isere
VAL D'ISERE, France — The women's World Cup super-G race in Val d'Isere, due to be held at 4:30 a.m. ET on Friday, had to be canceled because of heavy snowfall in France overnight.
Heavy snow fell overnight and continued into Friday morning. Organizers initially delayed the start by three hours hoping to hold the race in the afternoon, but conditions were not set to improve enough, with extremely poor visibility.
Friday was the first of three scheduled days of racing. Strong winds had forced the cancellation of last weekend's super-G in St. Moritz, Switzerland, and the race was moved to Val d'Isere.
Weather conditions are expected to improve in the French resort for Saturday's downhill and Sunday's super-combined.
