Serwa snags 2nd at ski cross opener in Italy (VIDEO BONUS)

INNICHEN/SAN CANDIDO, Italy — Canadian Kelsey Serwa battled to second place Saturday in the opening World Cup ski cross of the season, with Sweden’s Anna Holmlund taking the win.

Czech racer Nikol Kucerova took third and Heidi Zacher of Germany fourth.

Canadian Olympic champ Ashleigh McIvor was seventh, Julia Murray 11th and Marielle Thompson 21st. Danielle Poleschuk was disqualified.

On the men’s side, Nick Zoricic earned a spot in the four-racer final but just missed the podium, placing fourth. Swiss racer Patrick Gasser won the race, ahead of Austrians Andreas Matt and Thomas Zangerl.

Canada’s Davey Barr was seventh, Chris Del Bosco 11th, Brian Bennett 29th, David Duncan 37th and Stanislas Rey 48th.

For Serwa, it was redemption after finishing 12th and 19th in World Cup races at San Candido last year.

"I am in a good headspace this year," said the 21-year-old Serwa. "Last year was so much about qualifying for the Olympics and everything was about results. This year I am not too worried about the result I am just focusing on my skiing. And today I was just consistent with my runs, focusing on the process."

Serwa picked up the sixth podium result of her career. She has three wins.

"I qualified eighth yesterday so I didn't get lane choice at all today. So my focus was always to get over the first roller and on the snow before everyone else. I ended up in second through each heat, and never had too much pressure from anybody behind me so I didn't have to make any risky moves."

On the men's side, Zoricic led the Canadian charge with his strong start to the season in fourth.

"It was a dogfight to get there, tight racing," Zoricic said. "I am thrilled. It's a great start for me. Last year was tough because I was trying to learn so much. I was second-guessing myself a lot, never really sure of myself. It takes a while. I raced alpine for years and there is no question that is different. There is a learning curve."
