LECH, Austria —  Canadian snowboardcross divas Dominique Maltais and Maëlle Ricker remain perfect after the first two races of the 2011 LG Snowboard FIS World Cup season. Maltais cruised to her second consecutive victory Wednesday, closely followed by teammate Ricker in second place.

Bulgaria’s Alexandra Jekova was third as the Canadian made an emphatic statement in the opening week of SXB action.

“I am very thrilled with what’s happening right now,” said a jubilant Maltais, 29. “I am always very positive entering a new season, and I told myself it would be fun to start this season with a few wins. I never thought those dreams would come to reality. I had some bad luck in the last couple of seasons either with illness or injuries, so I think I deserve those wins.”

Maltais had never won back-to-back races. Both wins for Maltais came within 12 hours, as Tuesday’s race was held at night, under the lights.

“I never gave up. This summer, I rested more than I usually do. I focused on other things than snowboarding. My summer training went really well, and I remain as passionate and happy to be on snow.”

“When I compete, I don’t show up to be last: I always race to win. Today, I gave it all through the entire day. I feel in the greatest shape of my life right now!”

Maltais, still a firefighter for the city of Montreal, won the bronze medal at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games at Torino, Italy.

Maltais was leading after the first turn and kept her lead all the way down to the finish line. On the other hand, Ricker fought hard the whole track to overtake Jekova near the finish line for the second place.

The two World Cup victories for Maltais, her career fourth and fifth, ended a four-year drought Tuesday. Maltais now shows 19 podiums on the FIS World Cup tour in 49 starts.

With four podiums after two races, the duo of Maltais-Ricker is on track to repeating its 2010 domination when the riders earned a combined 12 podiums. The biggest race of 2011, which could be the last season for Maltais, will be at the 2011 FIS World Championships in La Molina, Spain.

In men’s action, veteran snowboarder Francois Boivin of Jonquière, Qué., who is celebrating his 28th birthday Wednesday, posted the best Canadian result in eighth place. Rob Fagan of Cranbrook, B.C., was 10th and Kevin Hill of Vernon, B.C., finished 12th.

Canada now has a world-leading six medals on the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup Tour.

The team now travels to Telluride, Colorado, where it will compete at the second World Cup event of the 2011 season.
