Five Canadian riders advance to snowboardcross finals at worlds
LA MOLINA, Spain — Canadian snowboardcross stars Dominique Maltais and Maelle Ricker advanced to the elimination round Monday at the World Championships in Spain.
Maltais, of Petite-Riviere St-Francois, Que., easily qualified by finishing fifth in the time trial. Ricker, of Squamish, B.C., was seventh.
Maltais and Ricker are 1-2 in the World Cup snowboardcross standings. Ricker won Olympic gold at the Vancouver Games last year.
The finals can be seen live Tuesday on Bold and CBCSports.ca (6 a.m. ET).
Three Canadians advanced in the men's time trials. Francois Boivin of Jonquiere, Que., was 22nd, Kevin Hill of Vernon, B.C., was 24th and Tom Velisek of Squamish, B.C., was 30th.
Dan Csokonay of Calgary finished 38th and did not make the cut.
The elimination rounds are scheduled for Tuesday.
Boivin and Ricker were the last Canadians to reach the snowboard cross podium at the World Championships. Boivin won a silver at the 2005 event in Whistler, B.C., while Ricker took the bronze. S-Magazine
