Cuche dials it in for Wengen training

WENGEN, Switzerland — Didier Cuche of Switzerland was fastest in training Wednesday for a men's World Cup downhill on the Lauberhorn course.

The defending World Cup downhill champion timed 1 minute, 50.31 seconds on a shortened course, with skiers starting lower down the mountain due to bad weather.

Cuche was 0.86 seconds faster than Werner Heel of Italy. Last year's Wengen winner, Carlo Janka of Switzerland, trailed by 1.21 in third.

Jan Hudec of Calgary was the top Canadian in 45th, followed by Ryan Semple of Mont-Tremblant, Que., in 48th.

Manuel Osborne-Paradis of North Vancouver, B.C., was 56th, Kelby Halbert of Bradford, Ont., 61st and Dustin Cook of Lac Sainte Marie, Que., 64th.

Four Austrians — Mario Scheiber, Georg Streitberger, Michael Walchhofer and Klaus Kroell — were in the top 10.

The Lauberhorn meeting is scheduled to open with a super-combined event on Friday.  S-Magazine
