SNOWBOARDING:
Canada Snowboard Nationals set for Stoneham, Tremblant
With a record-breaking performance by the Canadian Snowboard Team on the 2010 LG Snowboard FIS World Cup tour and three medals at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, this has been the most exciting and successful season in Canada Snowboard history. To cap off this magical season, Stoneham and Mont-Tremblant resorts in Québec will co-host the 2010 Canada Snowboard Nationals from March 26 to April 3.
The 13th edition of the Canada Snowboard Nationals will attract the best riders from Canada and the world, including riders who represented Canada at the 2010 Olympic Games. Olympic medallists Maëlle Ricker, Jasey-Jay Anderson and Mike Robertson will be in attendance among the 28 national team riders. Riders on the Canada Snowboard Development Program and from clubs across the country will also be participating in the competition.
“Canada Snowboard Nationals are essential in the growth of any club and provincial team rider. For many, this is the beginning of their dreams. Competing against national team riders, World Cup winners and Olympic medallists provides a great deal of satisfaction for young up-and-comer riders from all over the country,” said Michael Lambert, member of the Canadian Snowboard Team and World Cup winner.
“I still remember my first Canada Snowboard Nationals, when I was young and racing against Jasey-Jay Anderson, a legend in the sport. It motivated me to continue pushing my limits and to become a better rider,” added Lambert.
Stoneham Resort will kick things off by hosting the halfpipe competition on March 26 and 27. Canada’s top halfpipe riders will drop in the Olympic-sized superpose for practice on the 26 and compete for top Canadian honours on the 27. The Stoneham superpose is one of only two Olympic-sized halfpipe in Canada; the other is in Calgary.
As part of the 2010 Telus Spin, an outdoor festival that features music, art and contests, the Canada Snowboard Nationals for the snowboardcross, alpine and slopestyle disciplines will be held at Mont-Tremblant from March 29 to April 3. This event will be marked by slopestyle’s introduction into the Canada Snowboard Nationals program.
“In this Olympic year, we are proud to receive the snowboarding Canada Snowboard Nationals at Tremblant in the Telus Spin, our spring festival. Having seen with our regional athletes on the podium in Vancouver, it's an honour to welcome them home for their final race of the season,” said Alain Brochu, vice-president sales, marketing and communications of the Mont-Tremblant ski resort.
Slopestyle has been one of the most popular freestyle snowboarding events over the past decade within the Canadian snowboarding scene. Slopestyle was introduced this year on the FIS World Cup calendar, as well as on the FIS North American tour.
The 2010 Canada Snowboard Nationals will include, for the first time, an adaptive snowboard category. The world’s best adaptive riders will be in Mont-Tremblant to take part in the World Snowboard Federation 2010 Adaptive Snowboard World Cup. The event will be held on Friday, April 2, in conjunction with the able-bodied event.
The Canada Snowboard Nationals are also considered to be the FIS Nor-Am Cup Finals for snowboardcross, where the top North American riders will be crowned champion and earn a coveted personal World Cup spot for the following season.
Riders can register for nationals only through their provincial or territorial snowboard association. Once entered, riders can complete the process by submitting their payment online; this is the only way to confirm a spot in the competition(s).
