Schmid wins, Del Bosco 3rd in Swiss ski cross
MEIRINGEN-HASLIBERG, Switzerland — Olympic champion Michael Schmid secured the ski cross discipline title Sunday after winning the second-to-last race of the season.
The Swiss racer edged Audun Groenvold of Norway, with Canadians Christopher Del Bosco third and Stanley Hayer fourth.
Schmid leads Del Bosco by 218 points in the ski cross standings with just one race left next weekend at Sierra Nevada, Spain. A win is worth 100 points.
"Schmid had an amazing start and with the way the course was set there weren't any passing opportunities till near the bottom of the course," said Del Bosco. "All I could do was be patient and try to make a move at the bottom. It was really close."
“It was the top four qualifiers that ended up in the final and since I qualified fourth, I had the last lane choice, which made it difficult to get out of the start to the first gate,” Del Bosco said. “I mean, Schmid had an amazing start and with the way the course was set there weren’t any passing opportunities until near the bottom of the course. All I could do was be patient and try to make a move at the bottom. It was really close.”
On placing third for the second race in a row, Del Bosco said, “A podium is always good and these guys are really skiing well, it’s great to be close with them. Schmid had great starts all day and Groenvold has really stepped it up since the Games. … It’s good to be in it.”
In the women's race, Anna Holmlund of Sweden beat Ophelie David of France. Norway's Marte Hoeie Gjefsen was third and Switzerland's Katrin Mueller fourth.
David has a 73-point lead over Olympic champion Ashleigh McIvor in the ski cross standings.
After sweeping the previous event, the Canadian women were shut out, with McIvor fifth.
Canadian coach Eric Archer said, “It was a bit of a scramble today. The course set and the lack of passing lanes made it difficult to move and made for really tight racing. It was a good course just no passing lanes.”
Canada’s Danielle Poleschuk was seventh, Kelsey Serwa 10th and Aleisha Cline 32nd. SRC
