VALMALENCO, Italy — Canada’s Mäelle Ricker won a silver medal in a World Cup snowboard cross race Friday to secure the crystal globe as the overall season winner.

Canadian teammate Dominique Maltais won the bronze.

Ricker's medal comes on the heels of her gold-medal performance at the Vancouver Olympics.

The Vancouver native was edged by American Lindsey Jacobellis in the second-to-last race on this season's World Cup schedule.

American Alex Pullin won the men's race.

Ricker has clinched the FIS World Cup title with 4,760 points.

This crystal globe is Canada’s 11th in the short history of FIS World Cup snowboarding. All but one have been won by snowboardcross riders. Tara Teigen won the first crystal globe for Canada, in the halfpipe discipline in 1997.

Ricker now has two globes to her credit. Canada’s Jasey-Jay Anderson has won six globes in his illustrious career, including four overall titles.

Ricker is still in contention to win the overall crystal globe, all disciplines combined. Alpine rider Nicolien Sauerbreij of the Netherlands is sitting in second place with 3,800 points, followed by Doris Guenther of Austria in third with 3,700 points. Both Sauerbreij and Guenther have two races left on the FIS World Cup calendar.

Maltais took third place in Friday’s race to cut her point deficit to only 90 points against Norwegian rider Helene Olafsen, who finished fourth. With one race left on the World Cup calendar, Maltais will be gunning to surpass Olafsen for a 1-2 Canadian finish in women’s snowboardcross World Cup standings.

Ricker has had a phenomenal season to date. On top of winning the Olympic gold medal in the discipline, the 31 year-old has stepped onto the podium five times, winning three races. In her World Cup career, Ricker now boasts 31 podiums, including 14 victories, in 105 World Cup starts.

Maltais is also having her best season with five World Cup podium results, cumulating to 16 career podium results and three victories in only 46 World Cup starts.

These two podium results by Ricker and Maltais brings Canada’s podium tally to 26 for the 2010 FIS World Cup season, surpassing the all-time record for a Canadian snowboard team set in 2008.

In men’s action in Friday’s race, Rob Fagan took the ninth spot, followed by Tom Velisek in 12th and François Boivin in 15th. Drew Neilson placed 17th, while youngsters Dan Csokonay, Kevin Hill and Chris Robanske respectively placed 19th, 20th and 23rd.

The PGS events in Valmalenco are scheduled for Saturday, followed by the halfpipe contest on Sunday. Then, the Canadian team will be travelling to La Molina, Spain, for the 2010 LG Snowboard FIS World Cup Finals, where the globes will be handed out.  SRC
